Replacing the old Olympiastadion, The Allianz Arena was finished in 2005 and cost 340m Euros. The first match was between FC Nurnberg and TSV 1860, with Bayern Munich playing their first game in their new grounds a day later against the German National Team. Interestingly the 75,000-capacity stadium saw Bayern win 4-2.
As well as the almost always full-capacity games of Bayern, the grounds have been home to various important matches, such as games during the 2006 FIFA World Cup, the opening match between Costa Rica and Germany and the semi-final between Portugal and France. It also hosted the Champions League final between Bayern and Chelsea in 2012.
Getting to the Allianz Arena on Munich’s northern edge is relatively easy. It is only 10km away from the centre, and it is adjacent to both the A99 and A9 motorways. The metro is the easiest way to get there via public transport.
