Founded in 1905, hence the name Mainz 05, the team play their home games at the MEWA Arena, with a capacity of 34,000. As the team owes a lot of its heritage to Germany’s old carnivals, it’s no surprise the team pumps out Narrhallamarsch when they score a goal at home. They missed out on joining the Bundesliga in 1963 and spent the following 40 years as mainstays of the second division. Their near misses continued under pioneer coach Wolfgang Frank in 1997 and then in 2002, and again in 2003. However, in 2004, it was finally their time to join the ranks of the best in German football. Thanks to Jurgen Klopp when he was at the helm.
Since then, the club have enjoyed many notable successes, qualifying for the Europa League many times, including in 2016, where they reached the group stage, drawing impressively with European teams Saint-Etienne and Anderlecht.
