Although their name suggests a much older history, the modern form of Hoffenheim was established in 1945, following the end of WWII. The team was formed by merging the football team Fußballverein Hoffenheim and the gymnastics club, Turnverein Hoffenheim. At the start of the 90s, the team was just an amateur side that competed in the 8th division of the Baden-Wurttemberg A-Liga. However, the team enjoyed several promotions and competed in the Verbandsliga Nordbaden by 96.
Many fans and pundits agree that the financial backing of Dietmar Hopp, a software entrepreneur and former player, proved to be the change the team needed. Although it would only be the 08-09 season that they played in the Bundesliga, the progression was as quick as expected. During the 16-17 season, the team achieved its best finishing position of 4th place. Another notable achievement of the team is that it won the North Baden Cup in 02, 03, 04 and 05.
