Stade Raymond Kopa is the home ground of Ligue 2 team Angers and has a capacity of 18,752. It was opened in 1912 and originally named Stade Bessonneau before being renamed Stade Municipal and then Stade Jean-Bouin before being renamed a fourth time in 2007 after Raymond Kopa, a legendary figure in French football who debuted in the professional game at Angers.
Several renovations have occurred at the stadium, with one of the most recent in 1993 when the team was promoted to Ligue 1. This redevelopment project included the new aesthetically pleasing curved Colombier stand behind one of the goals. It is very similar in style to Marseille’s Stade Velodrome.
Stade Raymond Kopa is located about 2 km southwest of Angers city centre and takes approximately 30 minutes to walk from the cathedral to the venue.
If you plan to get there by train, it is about half an hour’s walk. There is also the option of three different buses, the 2, 9, or 12, that run to the stadium.
