Founded in 1926 and based in the city of Lorient in Brittany, Lorient is competing in Ligue 1 following their promotion from Ligue 2 at the end of the 19-20 season. Until 19-98, the team had been mostly amateur. Since it reached the professional rankings, Lorient has had moderate success, picking up the Coupe de France in 2002 when they beat Bastia 1-0.

Lorient has acted as a springboard team for many present-day international players like Karim Ziani, Matteo Guendouzi, Andre-Pierre Gignac, and the French international player Yoann Gourcuff, who began his career at Lorient before transferring to Rennes.
