Sassuolo was founded in 1920 and spent most of its history playing in Emilian amateur divisions before being promoted to Serie D in 1968. The team finally made it into the top-flight league, Serie A, for the 2013-2014 season and has played there ever since. This was when legendary Eusebio Di Francesco was at the club's helm from 2012 to 2014. Di Francesco returned later the same year and stayed with the club until 2017.
So far, a Serie A championship title has eluded the team. However, the team won the Serie B title in 2012-13, the Serie C1 in 2007-08 and the Supercoppa di Serie C in 2008. The team's only major appearance in Europe was during the Europa League in the 2016-17 season, where they reached the third round.
