El Submarino Amarillo, or The Yellow Submarine, as fans affectionately refer to Villareal, are one of the smallest yet most successful teams in top-flight Spanish football. Their dogged determination and gutsy attitude have won their fanbase and rivals’ respect. One of their most recent successes has been in winning the Europa League in 2021 after defeating Manchester United in the final.

Despite good European success, they tend to struggle in La Liga, never really fighting for the league title and instead competing for a spot in European football. Notably, the team had its highest finish in La Liga in second place, just 8 points behind the winners, Real Madrid. However, they are still popular among their fans and are always tough opponents for some of the biggest teams in football.
