Athletic Bilbao, who played their home games at San Mames Stadium, is one of the most illustrious and best-loved teams in La Liga. Nicknamed Los Leones, which means The Lions, they have won an astonishing number of trophies during their time in the beautiful football game. One of their most remarkable achievements as a team is that they have never been relegated from the Primera Division since they were founded in 1898. During that time, they have claimed the top spot an impressive 8 times and won the Copa Del Rey 23 times, including the very first one back In 1902.
Between 1914 and 1916, they won the league three consecutive times, and it was during this time that one of their most famous players was on the team, Pichichi, better known as Rafael Aranzadi. The LA Liga Top Scorer Award is called the Trofeo Pichichi in honour of him.
Two teams with strong rivalries with Atletico Bilbao are Real Madrid and FC Barcelona, who have also never been relegated. However, the rivalry between the team and Real Sociedad is the fiercest and is referred to as the Basque Derby.
