Stadio Comunale Luigi Ferraris is the home ground of Sampdoria, which they share with Genoa. It was named after an Italian footballer, engineer and soldier who died during World War 1, Luigi Ferraris.
The stadium was opened for its inauguration with a match between Inter and Genoa that was attended by 20,000 in 1911. It was 1912 when it hosted its first international game between Austria and Italy. Unfortunately, the home side lost the friendly 1-3. When it was selected to host a match during the World Cup of 1934, it had an expanded capacity of 30,000 and was used for the round of 16 games between Brazil and Spain.
When it was selected to be used during the 1990 World Cup, the stadium was rebuilt. It hosted three Group C games between Costa Rica, Sweden, and Scotland and a round-of-16 game between Romania and the Republic of Ireland.
