At first glance, one of the most exciting things about Hertha BSC is its name. It originates from a steamship that has a unique coloured smokestack. The team is one of the oldest in the German game, having been formed in 1892 initially by just four men who had a real passion for the beautiful game. They were almost immediately a hit with fans of football.
That club merged with Berliner Sports-Club to form the hybrid Hertha Berliner Sport-Club later in 1920. That partnership did not last; they reverted to their original name when the teams parted. One of the best times to be a fan of Hertha was undoubtedly during the 70s, when Uwe Kliemann and Erich Beer played for them. They have fierce rivalries with Eintracht Frankfurt and Werder Bremen that are always a lot of fun, and when they play the bigger teams like Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich, the crowd goes wild. However, they currently play in 2. Bundesliga, after being relegated in the 2022-2023 season, finishing last in the league with only 29 points.
